The Castle Gatehouse project seeks to create another compelling reason to visit Newark, which complements its other heritage attractions, attract new visitors and increase the vitality of the town centre in line with the Town Investment Plan’s objectives.
This will be achieved in part through the sensitive restoration of the structure the iconic Gatehouse building at Newark Castle. The Gatehouse is, according to Historic England, ‘the most complete example of a Romanesque gatehouse in England’.
As well as providing essential conservation work to prevent further deterioration of the Gatehouse, the project looks to establish the Castle as a destination attraction at the gateway to the town. It will provide interactive and dynamic galleries as well as a viewing platform at the top of the Gatehouse tower which will be interpreted through community co-curation to maximise civic pride and local engagement.
A new community hub and multi-function space will support an increased and rich programme of activities suitable for all ages, improving educational offer and commercial opportunities. The interventions will be sensitively designed to increase accessibility to the site, and the Castle Gardens will remain free and open to all visitors.
The project will be delivered by Newark and Sherwood District Council and support the following outputs and outcomes:
Better learning and employment opportunities for all in Newark.
Enhance the experience and ease for residents, visitors and employees.
A vibrant Town Centre where people visit, experience, shop, work and live.
To promote significant residential redevelopment in the town.
