A historic market town

Newark on Trent is a market town steeped in history. The ‘Key to the North’, it was and remains a story of the confluence of routes and histories, civic and civil. Geographically interesting, the town is bounded by the River Trent, A46, Newark Bypass to the West and the route of the A1(T) Newark Bypass to the North & East. Newark grew around this crossing point, becoming a strategically important and bustling staging post. Newark remains superbly well connected, being centrally located in England and served by the A1, A46 and A17, two railway stations and associated lines cross and connect the town on a North-South and East-West axis. Nottingham and Lincoln are within easy reach by train and road, with London being only 90 minutes by train.

Newark town centre is of sub-regional importance. Despite decline it retains a high independent offer. A Georgian town hall and the Grade I listed Church of St Mary Magdalene overlooks one of the finest Market Places in the UK. The ruined Castle and grounds, famed for its role in the English Civil War, is one of the town’s most significant landmarks. The town is home to the National Civil War Centre and Palace Theatre, the latter passing its centenary year in 2020. Key geographical and natural advantages make Newark a prime candidate to benefit from Levelling Up funding, ensuring that it retains its unique character and continues to thrive for future generations of residents, visitors and businesses.’

NEWARK TOWN BOARD

The Newark Town Board was first established in 2020 to provide strong and visible leadership for Newark, challenging partners to increase their ambition of what can be achieved collectively and acting as advocates for the town. The board oversees several key projects within the 2020 Town Investment Plan developed by the board and accelerated through £25m awarded to Newark through the UK Government’s Local Regeneration Fund in 2020 (previously known as the Towns Deal).

More recently, the Board became responsible for overseeing a further £19.5m awarded to Newark Town over a 10-year period (2026 to 2036) through the launch of the UK Government’s Pride in Place Programme. To oversee this programme, the board will bring together residents, local businesses, grassroots campaigners, workplace representatives, faith, and community leaders and those with a deep connection to their area.
